Synonymous for their silver paintwork, Mercedes have rarely drifted away from their traditional colours. However the 6 time world champions have just released their updated all-black livery for the 2020 season.
So far this year, we have seen a lot of things. Not least of all global protests in support of the Black Lives Matter movement something Lewis Hamilton, F1’s only black champion, has been extremely vocal about.
Lewis has called out members of the F1 community for staying silent on the issue and not using their platform to speak up against racism.
Many drivers have responded to the World Champions comments and have since spoken out in support of ending racism.
“I see those of you who are staying silent, some of you the biggest of stars yet you stay silent in the midst of injustice”– Lewis Hamilton via Instagram
Mercedes are not only making a stand against racism but are also pledging to increase diversity within their own organisation. An organisation in which only 3% of its employees identify and being from minority ethnic backgrounds.
“We will not shy away from our weaknesses in this area, nor from the progress we must still make; our livery is our public pledge to take positive action,” said Toto. “We intend to find and attract the very best talents from the broadest possible range of backgrounds, and to creative credible pathways for them to reach our sport, in order to build a stronger and more diverse team in the future”
Formula One has also announced it’s #WeRaceAsOne initiative as well as setting up a new task force with the aim of increasing diversity amongst its employees.
“We want to build a legacy that goes beyond sport,” said Hamilton, “and if we can be the leaders and can start building more diversity within our own business, it will send such a strong message and give others the confidence to begin a dialogue about how they can implement change.”– Lewis Hamilton
